Overview & History
This project adds a traffic signal at the intersection of 15th Avenue NE and NE 170th Street. New sidewalks, ADA curb ramps will also be added construction at all four corners. This project is partially funded by a State Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Program grant.
15th Avenue NE and NE 170th Street is a 4-way intersection with 3 lanes plus bike lanes running N-S and 2 lanes running E-W and in-pavement crosswalk lighting at the south side of the intersection. 15th Avenue NE is a primary arterial with approximately 20,000 cars utilizing the road per day. The City recently completed corridor improvements on 15th Avenue NE within the North City Area (15th Avenue NE between NE 172nd and NE 180th Streets) that included two lanes in each direction, underground utilities, six-foot sidewalks with four-foot amenity zones, curb bulbs and on-street parking on both sides and new traffic signals. This intersection is currently controlled by stop signs in the E-W direction.
This intersection has a history of accidents, some of them fatal. Construction of the traffic signal will provide safer pedestrian crossing. Once construction is completed, the in-pavement lighting will be removed.
