Project Description
This is a combination of two existing projects: the Midvale Avenue N Drainage Project and Darnell Park Neighborhood Drainage. The design goals include:
- Reduce Priority 1 Flooding
- Provide Additional Detention
- Enhance Water Quality
Overview and History
Periodic development of the area has placed Boeing Creek in a patchwork of pipe from the headwaters to the main open channel in Shoreview Park; a distance of just under two miles. Much of the existing pipe system is on private property. The solitary open portion of this otherwise piped drainage is a 400’ segment, located entirely within Darnell Park. Darnell is 5,100 feet from the main open channel in Shoreview. The undersize pipe and lack of detention contribute to local flooding near Midvale Avenue and Darnell Park, and erosive flows in Shoreview Park.
Midvale Avenue N drainage improvements will construct 700’ of new main-line conveyance in the right-of-way of N 178th Street from Midvale Avenue N to Interlake Avenue N. This will allow diversion of the flow from the patchwork system on private property. A new control structure, to be located in 178th right-of-way, will back water into a detention storage area in the Stone Ave N right-of-way. Projected storage will be between 0.1 and 0.2 acre-feet.
East Boeing Creek Flooding
Darnell Park improvements will likely include replacement of the existing pipe that carries flows from the flooding on 165th into Darnell Park. Grading in the park will be required to increase flood storage. These proposed improvements within the park will contribute to low flow water quality. The Park outfall will be modified to maximize live storage volumes (0.5 – 3 acre feet). This improvement is expected to greatly reduce both the incidences of flooding that occur upstream of the park and the downstream erosion.
