Off-Leash Dog Park

Status
As of May 2008
Phase: Planning
After a year of research and discussion, Shoreline's Off-Leash Dog Area (OLDA) Study Group invites the community to learn more about its initial recommendations at a public presentation on Thursday, June 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Shoreline Historical Museum.
The Study Group, consisting of eight citizen volunteers and two Park Board members, was formed last June to evaluate potential sites and develop a system-wide approach for off-leash dog areas in Shoreline. Last summer, the group began researching other cities' experiences and visited off-leash dog areas in the region as background for developing evaluation criteria. The resulting criteria, supplemented by the group member's own experiences at on- and off-leash dog sites, provided the basis for a thorough discussion of potential sites in Shoreline.
At a Saturday work session in April 2008, the group identified initial recommendations for pilot sites of off-leash activity and potential sites to consider in the future. The group is now ready to share these initial recommendations with the community. Please join them to learn more about their recommendations and the group's process to select pilot site choices at a public presentation on Thursday, June 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Shoreline Historical Museum, 749 N. 175th in Shoreline. Click to see the invitation for this event sent to licensed licensed dog owners in the community recently.
Overview & History
In May 2006, Shoreline voters approved a bond issue to acquire park property and improve parks throughout the community. One element of that bond was to site dog off-leash play area in Shoreline and build improvements needed for this new facility.
The City of Shoreline and its Park Board hosted an open house on October 14, 2006 to hear comments about the possibility of locating an off-leash dog park in a portion of Hamlin Park. The results of a survey distributed at that meeting and related comments are available by clicking here. Click on this survey link to download the survey made available that day.
Public comment about the proposed off-leash area at Hamlin was also given at the special Park Board meeting on October 26, 2006. Minutes and comments heard by the Park Board that evening are available by clicking here. A recent history of the off-leash area process in Shoreline is available by clicking here.
An Off-Leash Dog Area (OLDA) Study Group consisting of eight citizen volunteers and two Park Board members is in the process of reviewing and evaluating potential sites and developing a system-wide approach to provide an off-leash site in Shoreline.
